The Tashahhud

Is Tashahhud Mandatory in Prayer ?

In a prayer of more than 2 units, the intermediate tashahhud is not obligatory. Only the final tashahhud is obligatory in the salat. It is part of the obligations of prayer. During the tashahhud, the index of the right hand is pointed and our gaze fixes the finger. The tashahhud is a strong testimony of the attestation of faith and the oneness of Allah. There are 6 known formulas of tashahhud. For each of them, we offer the Arabic, phonetic and English version.

Tashahhud written in Arabic, Phonetic and English

Tashahhud 1

This Tashahhud formula is the best known. This is the one reported by al-Bukhari after Ibn Masu'd. He says that the prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) taught him this formula in the same way that he taught him a surah of the Qur'an:

« Greetings are for Allah, as well as prayers and good works. May peace be upon the prophet as well as the mercy of Allah and His blessing. Peace be upon us and on the pious servants of Allah. I testify that there is no deity other than Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. »
