The Mortuary Prayer (Salat Janaza)

Salat al Janaza and the Mortuary Wash

Before entering the actual death prayer, it is essential to recall some of the prophet's (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) recommendations on this subject.

What is recommended in agony (sounan 'inda al ihtidar)

  • Put the dying person in the Qibla
  • suggest that he say the attestation of faith (la ilaha illallah)
  • To recite surah Yasin (36)

The Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) sallallahu' alayhi wa sallam said: " Suggest to the dying to say" ilaha illallah " "" [Muslim] . He also said: " Yasin is the heart of the Qur'an. There is not a man who will recite it to please Allah and wanting the hereafter without forgiveness. Recite it with the intention of your dead. " [Ahmed]

What is recommended after death (sounan ba'da al mawt)

  • Close the eyes of the deceased and cover him
  • Haste the preparations for washing it
  • Pay off your debts
  • Make the mortuary prayer on him
  • Inform relatives and friends
  • Bury

The mortuary toilet (or wash) (ghousl al mayyit)

This task is the responsibility of the community (fard kifayah). It is recommended to wash the body one, 3 or 5 times (if necessary). At the last wash, put some perfume, or wash it with a scented soap.

The shroud (al kafan)

The community must put the deceased in a shroud if his family can not afford it. It is best if it is white, clean and fragrant. We wrap the man in 3 tissues, and 5 for the woman.

The mortal prayer (salat al janaza)

This prayer is also the responsibility of the community (fard kifayah). Whoever takes part in it must be in a state of purity (ablutions), dressed properly and stand up (if he has the capacity). There is no inclination, no prostration, no call to prayer. The deceased must be put between the imam and the Qibla. It is better to have at least 3 rows behind the imam.

How to do the mortal prayer?

Salat al janaza includes 4 takbir:

  1. The fatiha
  2. Prayer about the Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam)
  3. Allah is implored for the dead
  4. We make a short invocation and we make the salam on the right

Burial

It is a collective obligation to Muslims (fard kifayah). The dead man is put in his grave, his face turned to the Qibla. It is permissible to cry with sadness, but it is forbidden to say things that displease Allah, for example: why him, why now, why this, why he was too young to die, and any word that goes to against belief in destiny and predestination.

Special Cases

Janat Salat on a martyr

The martyr killed in a battle with the infidels is buried without washing or mortuary prayer. Other types of martyrs are not affected by this exception.

Janaz Salat on a Recovered Body Part

It is possible to pray on a part of the body found.

Janat Salat on a Newborn

The newborn who has shown a sign of life must be washed and receive the mortal prayer, just like an adult. That said, since the newborn is automatically admitted to Paradise, the invocation made during the third unit of prayer differs slightly.
